The Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of the Indian State of Tamil Nadu to set up two mega township projects in the State with an investment outlay of AED 2 billion. The MoU for the landmark urban infrastructure development projects was signed by Dr. Khater Massaad, Advisor to the RAK Crown Prince and CEO of RAKIA, and S. Ramasundaram, Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd, in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi in Chennai on Saturday.

The project in the industrial city of Coimbatore will come up on 1000 acres and will have an Information Technology Special Economic Zone supported by an integrated feeder township. The township will also have world class leisure and residential facilities including golf course, shopping malls, resort hotel, health spa and residential villas and apartments. The township, expected to be completed in five years, will have about 5 million sq.ft of IT space.

The second project would witness the creation of a world class marina and township at Kadalur in Kancheepuram district. The 500- acre marina project would have water sports, leisure, entertainment, premium residences and a world class golf course. Speaking on the ambitious overseas venture of RAKIA, Dr. Khater Massaad said that RAKIA, under the guidance of H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of RAK, was privileged to be able to partner the State of Tamil Nadu in the world class project that will catapult the State to the forefront of development. ‘We believe that the landmark venture would enable RAKIA to share its considerable expertise in infrastructure development and property sector for the development of Tamil Nadu,’ he said.

Dr. Massaad said that creation of top- notch urban infrastructure in cities like Coimbatore would give the much needed fillip to the industry and business environment in the State and facilitate further investment in IT and other sectors. “The venture marks the further strengthening of the close relations between Ras Al Khaimah and India, which has seen the creation of many successful partnerships like the RAK Ceramics factory located at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh (AP), the proposed one million tonne capacity Alumina plant in AP and many mega Indian industrial ventures based in RAK,” he added. Dr. Massaad said that the townships will be designed and constructed by internationally renowned architects and contractors. Ras Al Khaimah has emerged as a favourite destination for life-style and tourism development projects in the region. According to a research study published recently, investors have lined up nearly AED 60 billion worth of real- estate projects for completion in Ras Al Khaimah before 2010.

Hope grandkid’s veena will soothe my nerves: Karunanidhi

Chennai: A succession war may be raging in Tamil Nadu’s first political family, but when it comes to cultural events it is always a huge show of strength.

Karunanidhi’s granddaughter Ezhilarasi Jothimani performed her first veena recital in the Music Academy Hall on Sunday.

The CM’s huge family comprising his two wives, all their children and the Marans were in full attendance. Ezhilarasi is the daughter of Karunanidhi’s eldest daughter Selvi and son-in-law Murasoli Selvam [brother of late Murasoli Maran].

Karunanidhi always makes it a point to address such cultural functions that he presides over. Most of the times, he makes a subtle political statement. “Ours is an artistic family, not a broken one. It cannot be broken easily. That is my fervent prayer though I don’t believe in god [En kudumbum kalai kudumbum, kalaaitha kudumbum, kalaika mudiyadha kumdumbum],” he said amidst loud applause.

Political undercurrents were clearly visible as family members assembled for the concert and occupied their seats. Though at one point in time Karunanidhi’s warring sons Alagiri and Stalin and their youngest sibling Tamizharasu were seen together, the two brothers made sure they didn’t sit next to each other.

Alagiri sat next to half-sister Kanimozhi while Stalin sat with mother Dayalu Ammal and Murasoli Selvam.

Karunanidhi heaped praises on his granddaughter for her musical accomplishments. He jokingly said, “I can perhaps call upon Ezhilarasi to perform and soothe my nerves when I am mentally disturbed,” but quickly added, “That does not mean I am going to suffer such situations frequently.”

Selvi Selvam is, in fact, credited with bringing about a rapprochement between the Maran and Karunanidhi families after Alagiri’s men attacked Tamil daily Dinakaran’s office in Madurai in 2007.

    Robbery through coal Import
    Indian Express dated 19-04-2010

NEYVELI, April 18, 2010 — AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Sunday alleged that coal for the TNEB TNEB Tamil Nadu Electricity Board was being imported at a much higher price to benefit the chief minister’s family members.

The electricity board was importing coal from Indonesia at the rate of US $103 per tonne while the actual rate was only US $82 per tonne.

Jayalalithaa said from reliable sources she had come to know that those Indonesian coal firms were owned by CM’s daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi and minister K N Nehru’s brother Ramajayam.

“This means that US $21 for every tonne of coal imported from Indonesia goes as bribe for the CM’s family. From the 2.1 million tonne of coal imported from Indonesia every year, the CM’s close relatives are earning Rs 2,000 crore n. 1. Ten millions; as, a crore of rupees (which is nearly $5,000,000) ten million illicitly,” she said at a demonstration against frequent powercuts in the State at Neyveli on Sunday.

She accused that this ‘Himalayan corruption’ taking place in importing coal from Indonesia for the TNEB was a ‘planned robbery’ of the State’s revenue by the CM’s family and was causing huge losses for the TNEB.

She said that allegedly the recently loans amounting to Rs 8,500 crore taken by the State from various by pledging the assets of TNEB was being ‘robbed’ by the CM’s close relatives. The board president was also hand in glove cooperatively, hand and glove with his political masters and was turning blind eye towards the issue. She alleged that private firms from which power was being purchased at higher rates were greasing palms of the CM’s family.

CM makes a point in coal war
    April 6th, 2010 DC Correspondent
    http://www.deccanchronicle.com/chennai/cm-makes-point-coal-war-853

April 5: With AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa reiterating her charge over import of coal for the TNEB, chief minister M. Karunanidhi on Monday again denied the charges and dismissed them as thoroughly false.

In a detailed reply, Mr Karunanidhi pointed out the TNEB had been importing only around 17 lakh tonnes of coal every year but Ms Jayalalithaa was claiming the import figure at 130 lakh tonnes annually.
“One can understand that how her charges are wrong from the fact that the TNEB imported only 83 lakh tonnes of coal in the last five years while she is alleging that it had imported 680 lakh tonnes,” he said.
Mr Karunanidhi disputed her claim on the cost of import too. “She says we procure coal at a cost of Rs 3,000 crore a year but it is actually between Rs 392 crore and Rs 1,193 crore.

Dismissing her allegation that the government had bypassed a company that offered to supply coal at lower cost in last month, the CM said the TNEB had not invited tenders from anyone to procure coal. “The government had avoided procuring coal from private parties since it led to someone making allegations. Hence we purchase imported coal only through the MMTC, which is a Central enterprise. Even Ms Jayalalithaa’s government adopted the same principle in 2005 to import coal,” he said.
Taking a dig at Ms Jayalalithaa for levelling charges against the government, he said a person like her who is a former chief minister and Opposition leader should go into such a matter in depth instead of issuing shallow statements.

Mr Karunanidhi denied that the TNEB had connections with the Star Emmsons Resources, a sister concern of the ETA-Star group. He said the contract for the construction of state secretariat and Assembly complex was awarded after global bidding and coal had been imported through MMTC. He said some officials had been hoodwinking her with false information and it would not take long time to “unmask such miscreants.”

Earlier in the day, Ms Jayalalithaa reiterated her charge that TNEB had incurred losses by importing low quality coal at higher cost.

According to documents filed with the Registrar of Companies in Chennai, Genex was incorporated in September 17, 2008 with two directors, Mohammed Hassan (58) and Ahamed Shakir (41). The company was represented by Ahmed Syed Salahuddin (32) on the board of Swan. All three of them belong to Kilukarai, a small coastal village in Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu link now gets further strengthened. Ahmed Syed Salahuddin is the younger son of Syed Mohammed Salahuddin, the NRI business tycoon heading the Dubai based real estate conglomerate ETA Ascon Star Group, which in turn began its Indian operations in 2006 by floating several real estate firms across the state. Raja was then Union Environment Minister and his party the DMK assumed power in Tamil Nadu.

The ETA Group entered into a MoU with the Tamil Nadu government for setting up an IT Economic Special Zone worth Rs 3750 crore, when A Raja became the Union Telecom Minister in May 2007. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was present at the much-hyped MoU signing ceremony for the project proposed at Kancheepuram, near Chennai on a nearly 500 acre plot.

It is mysterious that a large business group should enter Swan’s board through a company with a meager one lakh paid up capital. Incidentally, Genex Exim, having acquired more than Rs.380 Cr of Swan Telecom shares, has not filed any document with the authorities to show their source of income.

Opposition to Neyveli Lignite disinvestment hotting up
    25 Jun 2009, 1827 hrs IST,ET Bureau
    http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/indl-goods-/-svs/metals-mining/Opposition-to-Neyveli-Lignite-disinvestment-hotting-up/articleshow/4702329.cms

CHENNAI: In the next couple of days, the lignite town, Neyveli is set to get national attention . For, major political parties will be converging there to outbeat each other in stone walling the move by the UPA Government to revive the disinvestment process in the public sector, Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

The ruling DMK, which had thwarted the disinvestment process in 2006, was the first to raise its voice this time in Parliament, when party Rajya Sabha MP, K Kanimozhi said the party is not in favour of the policy in core sectors. But, the the party did not rake up the issue further and was waiting for the disinvestment department to move further on the front.

But, the opposition has now hijacked the issue from DMK and called for a series of protest meetings. PMK Founder, Dr S Ramadoss has declared the party’s labour wing will organise a fast at Neyveli on Friday against the Government’s move to further disinvest by selling 10% stake in NLC.

He said since the Government had already disinvested 6.5% in the corporation and listed the shares, the party will not allow further sale of shares. Criticising the move to sell the Rs 10 face for Rs 10,000 in the market, Dr Ramadoss said, instead NLC could sell the 10% stake at par value to its employees, contract workers and those who gave their lands for expansion.

He also said in 2006, the Centre gave up the decision after DMK President and Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi announced withdrawal of support to the UPA Government. For PMK, which drew blank in the Lok Sabha Elections without winning a single seat, it is a crucial issue to retain its base in the Vanniayar dominated belt.

Supporting her ally’s stand, AIADMK general Secretary, J Jayalalithaa has also announced party leaders and union leaders will organise protest meetings at Neyveli on Friday evening to condemn the move to sell 10% stake in the highly profit making NLC and other undertakings under the coal Ministry.

She declared the party will not allow disinvestment in NLC when it made a net profit of Rs 821 crore in 2008-09 and is remaining as a backbone for industrial production by supplying power. She assailed the DMK Government for not caring for the interest of working class.

Seeing the opposition raising the antenna over the issue, DMK does not want to be left behind them. Former North Chennai MP and President of Party’s labour wing, Labour Progressive federation, C Kuppuswamy told ET, ” We have not yet politicised the issue. But, we have called for a fast at Neyveli on July 4 against disinvestment. State Health Minister, M R K Panneerselvam and union leaders will participate on the occasion”.

LPF Secretary, M Shanmugam declared like in 2006, the federation will sponsor a strike once the disinvestment is announced. It represents majority of the 19,000 permanent workmen in NLC.

Kuppusamy said NLC has to be differentiated from other PSUs while implementing the disinvestment policy. It is a major source of power supply for the State at low cost. ( NLC supplies 1200 mw to TNEB at Rs 2.75 per unit and the board pays more for drawing from other sources). When pointed out the Centre is trying to sell only 10% stake, he said, ” We dont want to allow them to open a pandora’s box”.

Officials in NLC said they have no clue about the disinvestment process. In any case, they felt it will be a hard decision for the Government to take considering the growing opposition and its fall out on its normal operations. Recently, NLC CMD, R Ansari said in Chennai while the issue is debatable between the Centre and State, the corporation will go by the decision of Government.
